Porch Pirate Arrested
On November 30, 2021, Parsons Police took a report for a theft of delivered goods off a porch. There was a video of the suspect that was posted on social media.
The investigation on the 30th lead to officers gathering video from several sources throughout a thorough neighborhood canvass.
On December 1, 2021, Parsons Police Officer Rory Johnson was called to the 2700 block of Gabriel for a report of a possible break in of an unoccupied house. Officers searched the residence and located Rachel Lynn Ashley, 33-years-old of Parsons, in the house. The owner of the residence said that no one was allowed inside. Rachel was arrested without incident by Officer Johnson and transported to the Parsons Police Department.
This investigation led to Rachel being positively identified as the suspect in the theft that had been on social media. Officers made the connection and charges are being filed for that case as well.
Parsons Police Detective Lieutenant Sherrie McGuire said, "although social media sometimes give credence to false claims there is also a huge benefit to police by being involved in social media. This case was closed in less than a day due to the attention and interest that it was shown. I am amazed by the quality of cameras in our community and the number of citizens who use them. It makes the work of law enforcement much more effective to gain good quality arrests and convictions. Porch pirates should beware that there is always someone watching."
The following charges are being requested by the Parsons Police Department for Rachel Ashley: Criminal Trespass, Theft, and Burglary. The case will be reviewed by the Labette County Attorney's Office.
This continues to be an on-going investigation and citizens are encouraged to "See It, Hear It, Report It." If anyone has any further information on this incident or any other criminal activity, please contact the Parsons Police Department at 421-7060 or call the Tip Line at 421-7057 or email at tips@parsonspd.com.
