Motorcycle Crash Leads to Foot Chase
On Christmas Day, Parsons Police Officers were called by multiple sources about a motorcycle speeding though the city reaching estimated speeds of 100mph. The description of the motorcycle was a black and green sport bike.
Officers have recently tried to stop a black and green sport bike matching this description, but the rider evaded officers. On Christmas, the described bike was witnessed by Corporal Ryan Shirk and Officer Donald Joy while patrolling on South 16th Street.
When the driver was spotted, the driver quickly turned off 16th street onto Partridge heading east. Officers tried to find the driver and later caught sight of the bike turning east on Morgan. When officers got behind the bike in attempt to make a traffic stop the rider had already turned onto 10th Street heading north to the low water bridge. Officers realized the rider was speeding away in an attempt to avoid law enforcement before they could activate their lights and sirens. The officers drove to the low water bridge by Marvel Park knowing that it is a hazard to navigate when not paying close attention. When they crested the hill at the park, they located bike parts strewn down the street and the bike was laid over with the driver attempting to standup. As they pulled up to render aid due to the crashed bike, the rider took off on foot leading officers in a foot chase. They chased the suspect south near the creek before finding the rider located in the shallow creek trying to conceal themselves up against the creek bank. The rider was taken into custody without further incident.
The officers removed the rider's helmet and discovered it was Danny Cash Jr, who had been running from them. Cash was complaining of shoulder pain due to the wreck and was quickly released to Labette County Emergency Medical Services for transport to Labette Heath for treatment.
The motorcycle was towed away from the scene and the Parsons Police Department is seeking charges for Speed Unsafe for Conditions and Interference with Law Enforcement.
Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks said, "the unseasonably warm holiday brought a lot of people outside. This man could have easily hit a child playing outside while crossing the street. We can't allow that kind of recklessness when there are extended families and child playing in our community over a holiday. We would enforce this kind of violation any day of the week, but we are grateful that no innocents were hurt. I feel bad that the rider crashed his motorcycle, but he is expected to recover, if he had run over a child at those estimated speed, I doubt that this would have been such an easy case to work. Thank you to the citizens that called in the reckless behavior for officers to investigate."
This continues to be an on-going investigation and citizens are encouraged to "See It, Hear It, Report It."
