Man Arrested on Multiple Felony Charges
On October 26, 2020 at approximately 8:54 pm, Parsons Police were called to Prairie Village Apartments at 1100 S 13th for a report of an argument with a weapon involved.
Officers arrived at the apartment complex and spoke to a witness who denied anything was taking place or that anything had happened. Without any evidence of a crime having taken place, officers left the apartment complex only to be called back a short time later and told to talk to another female at the apartment complex that was then identified. It was soon discovered that there had been a physical domestic fight that had taken place with children present. Further investigation discovered that a woman was forcefully taken from the laundry room area back to an apartment by a man with a gun. The suspect allegedly used the firearm to hit the female in the head and then grabbed her around the neck cutting off her air supply. The man was reported to have kicked and stomped on her body as well. During the incident, the suspect fired the gun at a closet in the apartment. The female was later able to escape and had a local neighbor call the police.
Police were able to locate and arrest Nahum Nehemiah Brown, 28 year old male of Parsons, for Aggravated Domestic Battery, Aggravated Kidnapping, Criminal Discharge of a Firearm at an Occupied Dwelling, Aggravated Endangering a Child, Aggravated Assault and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Dakeshia Shantae Reece, 28 years old of Parsons, was also arrested for felony Interference with Law Enforcement and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
The five children that were at the apartment were placed with family members. Officials have been notified about the children and police are working with Department of Children and Families (DCF).
Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks said, "This is an unfortunate incident that has taken place, but as unfortunate as it is, we are lucky that there was not a homicide or multiple homicides. Often violent domestic situations turn deadly behind closed doors. These are the crimes that are almost impossible for police to prevent. Without strong community-based safety nets these incidents will continue to happen. I am shocked that the initial person contacted lied to officers about the situation as a whole and I hope that she understands her life or the life of her children could have been compromised as a result of her actions. It is important that we continue to 'See It, Hear It, Report It' to help prevent this type of call from happening."
Felony Domestic Violence is the number one leading type of violent crime in Parsons. In addition to these felony crimes, last year Parsons officers responded to 183 Domestic Violence calls.
"This crime reads more like a bad novel," said Deputy Chief Dennis Dodd. "This same suspect was out on bond for another assault and is awaiting trial. The revolving door of domestic violence is one that our community must stop from revolving."
This is key since October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month. Visit www.thehotline.org for more information on domestic violence prevention.
This continues to be an on-going investigation and citizens are encouraged to "See It, Hear It, Report It."
