Found Bones Prompt Police Response
On September 27, 2020 at approximately 1630 hours, a Parsons resident came to the station to report finding bones. The resident took officers out to a wooded area on the eastside of Parsons, near 10th and Briggs, where he had located the bones.
Parsons Police Patrol Sergeant Waylon Kepley took command and secured the scene. Sgt. Kepley could not immediately and clearly identify the bones to be animal or human in origin. The Parsons Police Department Investigations Division was notified.
A Detective responded to the scene and partnered with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and their forensic specialists, we were able to determine that the bones in question were in fact animal remains and not human remains.
Interim Commander Kyle Wiford wants to again thank the citizen who reported the bones, and also for being so cooperative with the investigation and its process. "As always, we appreciate our partnership with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and want to thank them for their assistance and expertise. Although this incident turned out to be nothing criminal in nature, it is always best to report suspicious findings to be investigated. One can never know what small thing or detail maybe a key in breaking open a cold case," concluded Wiford.
Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks said, "This was a success for 'See It, Hear It, Report It' in the eyes of the department. Once again police cannot be everywhere in the city but concerned citizens can sure help direct our attentions to what needs to be investigated. A community that partners with its police is surely a city that will prosper."
