The Parsons Police Department has announced the arrest of Charles Levi Miller, 34, of Pittsburg, KS, following an investigation led by Sergeant Christian Smith and his K9 partner, Morgan. The arrest occurred at approximately 2:00 AM on August 14, 2024, in the area of 26000 Rd and Ottawa Rd., a location under increased added patrol due to recent reports of suspicious/criminal activity.
During the early morning hours, Sgt. Smith observed a vehicle parked in the area and initiated an investigation. K9 Morgan was deployed to conduct an open-air sniff of the vehicle and subsequently alerted officers to the presence of controlled substances. A thorough search of the vehicle confirmed the presence of illegal drugs, leading to Miller's arrest.
Further investigation revealed that Miller is a registered sex and drug offender in the state of Kansas. His previous convictions include Indecent Solicitation of a Child (14-
The Parsons Registered Offender Program (PROP) was promptly notified, and a compliance check was conducted regarding Miller's registration status. It was discovered that Miller had failed to comply with his annual renewal requirement for his Kansas ID/DL in July of 2023, a violation that had persisted for over 380 days. Due to the prolonged non-compliance, this violation has been classified as aggravated. Miller has a prior conviction for Violation of Offender Registration in 2016, further complicating his legal situation.
Miller is currently being held at the Parsons Police Department Lock-up pending review of charges by the Labette County Attorney's Office. The charges under review include two felony counts of Aggravated Violation of Offender Registration, one felony count of Violation of Offender Registration 2nd Offense, and one misdemeanor count of Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Lt. Kyle Wiford applauded the efforts of Sgt. Smith and K9 Morgan, stating, "Their dedication to serving and investigating, even in the dark hours of the night, is a testament to their commitment to keeping our community safe. Their vigilance and teamwork have once again ensured that a potentially dangerous individual is off our streets."
The Parsons Police Department, in conjunction with PROP, remains committed to ensuring the safety of the community and enforcing compliance among registered offenders. We would like to thank the Labette County Sheriff's Office deputies for their assistance during this arrest and the ongoing investigations in the area.
The Parsons Police Department's Added Patrol Program allows citizens and business owners to request increased patrols in specific areas of concern. This initiative is designed to address community safety by focusing on locations that may be experiencing suspicious activity or other issues.
