Domestic Turns to Attempted Murder

Date Posted: 08/26/2021

On Wednesday August 25, 2021, Parsons Police Officers were called to a report of a domestic fight that took place in the 300 block of S 22nd.

A victim interview indicated that Jack Thomas Melton, 32-year-old male of Parsons, got into a physical domestic fight with the victim before leaving Parsons to go to Altamont.

Officers were told that Melton attacked the victim from behind by punching her and then putting her in a choke hold from behind while making homicidal comments. This led the victim to fear for her life. She was able to break free and grab one of their two children and leave the house to contact law enforcement. During the struggle a 1-year-old male child suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Melton left the residence, according to the victim, with their 3-year-old child and went to a family members house in Altamont where he was detained by the Altamont Police Department. Parsons Police Corporal Ryan Shirk went to Altamont and arrested Melton on suspicions of Attempted Second Degree Murder, Abuse of a Child, and Aggravated Child Endangerment.

Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks said "domestic violence has had an ill effect on our city for years. Policing domestic violence is difficult to say the least. It is a community problem that has to be solved in the home before police response. If you know someone that is suffering from domestic problems at home, please reach out and offer help. The national domestic violence hotline has a website for anyone to use https://www.thehotline.org/ or text "START" to 88788 or call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) please use this and help our community and your loved ones."

This continues to be an on-going investigation and citizens are encouraged to "See It, Hear It, Report It."
