Chase Leads to Felons Arrest

Date Posted: 08/31/2020

On Sunday, August 30, 2020 approximately 10:36 pm, Parsons Police Sergeant Brice Dickens was on North 16th street and driving south when he noticed a vehicle in with no license plate visible. Sergeant Dickens conducted a traffic stop at 16th and North Boulevard.

Sergeant Dickens told the driver, Ivan William Oldenburg, 37 of Parsons, the reason for the stop. Oldenburg was not able to produce any valid registration for the vehicle. Sergeant Dickens was informed by Dispatch that Oldenburg had two active warrants for his arrest from Johnson County, Kansas and Linn County, Kansas. Sergeant Dickens approached the vehicle again to take Oldenburg into custody only to find that he had locked the door and rolled up the windows. Sergeant Dickens attempted to de-escalate the situation with Oldenburg and explain that he would only end up with more charges if he did not comply with the orders. Oldenburg rolled the window down slightly for Sergeant Dickens to talk to him. Oldenburg was told that he had active warrants and was not free to leave. After multiple attempts to get Oldenburg to comply willingly with their request officers were forced to break the driver's side window to open the door and arrest Oldenburg. Oldenburg put the vehicle in drive and fled from the scene while officers were trying to get him out.

Oldenburg fled from officers staying primarily on the east side of the city. Oldenburg left the road several times and ended up wrecking into a steel cable in the elks parking lot where he was taken into custody. While in custody Oldenburg was seen by Labette Health EMS and eventually taken to Labette Health to be treated.

Parsons Police has requested the Labette County Attorney's Office to charge Oldenburg for the following: Fleeing or Attempt to Elude, Interference with Law Enforcement Officers, Reckless Driving, Speeding, No Headlights, Failure to Signal, Illegal Turning, and Illegal Tag. He is also being held on the Linn County warrant for Probation Violation.

Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks said, "Here is a great example of proactive policing at work. Sergeant Dickens noticing a missing tag on a vehicle that leads to an arrest of a wanted felon. That is what proactive policing is all about."

This continues to be an on-going investigation and citizens are encouraged to "See It, Hear It, Report It."
